Narakdharis
There are two types of Nirankaris. First one
started during Sikh kingdom. It was started by Baba Dyal. He never claimed
himself as a Guru only as a follower of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Nirankaris
believed in reading Gurbani and contemplating on the word of the Guru. They used
to do kirtan at their deras.
The second sect is the follower of Boota Singh
(1873-1943). He used to perform Kirtan with the first sect of Nirankaris but
once he was caught drinking alcohol for which he was kicked out. He was an
alcoholic. He died from lungs and kidney destruction which was the result of his
drinking. His follower named Avtar Singh used to work at a bakery shop. He
became the next leader of Nirankari cult in 1943 after the death of Boota Singh.
After India’s independence he setup a new building to carry out his activities.
He divided the cult into seven groups and claimed to have created ‘seven stars’.
This was to attack the Sikh practice of ‘Panj Pyare’. Avtar singh’s son was
Gurbachan who was a worker in a motor parts factory. He was appointed as the
next leader in 1963. He would call himself ‘prophet’ his wife ‘Mother of the
world’, and his son ‘Guru Maharaj’. When his wife Budhwantee died, a tract
‘Jagat Mata’ was published by this cult in which one of their post wrote:

Their mission is to attack Sikh religion for the
sake of money. They are being paid in millions by the government. They hired
couple of writers to write their own scripture called “Avtar Bani” which they
consider “word of God” and claim to have faith in. This book is basically full
of senseless poems. The worst thing about this book is that they have used
Gurbani from Guru Granth Sahib Ji and mixed it with their own poems.
Distorting Sikh history to mislead people is their
main mission. Perhaps they have forgotten the dooms of those who dared to put
prices on the heads of Sikhs. Their “Guru” preaches that keeping of hair is
unnecessary. Then why does he himself keep hair and a beard? It is very clear
that by doing so he is not only misrepresenting the Sikh identity but also
misleading innocent Sikh people to cut their hair. If he doesn’t follow his own
preaching how does he expect his followers to follow it? Here is what they have
to say about Sikhi:
“My Sikhi does not depend on
keeping hair.” (YugPurash, Baba Avtar Nirankari)
After
the death of Gurbachan Singh, Hardev Singh took over and has been leading the
Narakdharis cult with the full support of the Indian government. They have established their camps in every village
throughout Punjab. The in charge person of the camp or “rabbi” is provided with
a house, monthly allowance, car, television and everything because their
spirituality is based only upon attacking and distorting Sikhi to drift people
away from the true principles of the Sikh Gurus. They used to hold an annual
program where they would weigh their ‘prophet’ Gurbachan and his wife with
money. Every Sunday they hold a gathering where they sing praises of Gurbachan,
and their ‘guru’ initiates people into the cult by whispering a secret name in
their ears. The worst of all, they use Gurbani out of context and translate it
to suit their own needs to mislead new comers.
They have no particular set of beliefs, or
character. They make five vows. The main one is to eat and drink everything.
Other religions prohibit drinking alcohol but it is looked upon as a holy thing
by them. They openly drink alcohol, and smoke cigarettes. Their camps are a
major attraction for those who want to have some cocaine, weed, and heroin. Many
government officials have secretly joined them to enjoy the characterless
lifestyle and do what they can’t even do at bars and clubs. According to them,
physical acts have nothing to do with spirituality.
They were greatly suppressed during the rise of
Sikh movement in early 80s. After the decline of the movement, they have started
to regroup. Their deras now resemble training camps where followers are fed with
anti-Sikhi propaganda and being trained to prepare for another battle with the
Sikh nation. The government support continues as it did before. |
