Bhai Inderjeet Singh Jammu
Aman Singh
Introduction
Shaheedi (martyrdom) is the lifeblood of a community. Shaheedi revives dying
communities and creates the thirst for freedom. But martyrdom only goes only to
blessed souls. A normal person is born, lives life and in the end dies. But a
Shaheed chooses his own death and for the sake of his people, abandons a life of
pleasure and goes on the path of the gallows. To give a selfless Shaheedi is
perhaps the greatest task in the world. Very few warriors vow to become shaheeds.
This is the story of Bhai Inderjeet Singh Jammu.
Childhood
Yodha
Bhai Inderjeet Singh Jammu was born on the 26th of January 1967. Bhai Sahib’s
father was Bhai Gurcharan Singh Fauji and his mother was Bibi Amarjeet Kaur.
From a young age Bhai Inderjeet Singh started reciting Gurbani and at the tender
age of 10 he started standing on Gurudwara stages where he would talk about
Panthic issues and sing Kavitas about Jujharoo Singhs.
Bhai Sahib’s family lived in Jammu Kashmir’s mountainous parts, Batota area, in
Guhadi village.
Bhai Inderjeet Singh was the eldest of all six brothers and sisters. Bhai Sahib
finished 10th grade in a government secondary school in Santvari. After this
Bhai Inderjeet Singh got admission at I.T.I Electrician College.
Even with all the pressures that come with studying Bhai Sahib still managed to
attend many Gurmat Smagams.
Going to Amritsar
During Bhai Sahib’s studies he had heard about Sant Ji through various tapes
which were being circulated at that time. After hearing Sant Ji’s speeches, Bhai
Sahib decided to go to Amritsar.
When Bhai Sahib first reached Amritsar, he met Singhs from Ajnala. After
spending some time with these Singhs, he was left at Baba Dayal Singh
Lachmansar’s Dera. Bhai Inderjeet didn’t feel comfortable here and as a result
he decided to go and have darshan of Sach Khand Sri Darbar Sahib. Bhai Sahib
also wanted to have darshan of Sant Ji.
Bhai Inderjeet Singh Ji heard a lot about Sri Maan Sant Gyani Baba Jarnail Singh
Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale from sangat he would meet who had had the darshan of Sant
Ji.
Meeting
Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale
When
Bhai Sahib eventually met Sant Ji, they had a very simple conversation. Bhai
Inderjeet Singh Ji asked Sant Ji if he could stay with him and the rest of the
Singhs at Sach Khand Sri Darbar Sahib. Sant Ji agreed straight away.
When Baba Dayal Singh found out that Bhai Inderjeet Singh had met Sant Ji and
had begun to stay with the jatha, he tried to become and obstacle between the
jatha and Bhai Sahib. However, in the end Bhai Inderjeet managed to stay with
the Singhs at Darbar Sahib.
Son of
the Sikh Kaum
Bhai Sahib’s parents Bhai Gurcharan Singh Fauji and Bibi Amarjeet Kaur had not
seen their son for a long time. They sent word to him that they wanted to see
their son. Bhai Inderjeet Singh Ji told them that their son does not belong to
them anymore. He is the son of the Sikh Kaum and he had decided to spend his
whole life living under the feet of Guru Sahib’s sangat.
The Final Letter
A few days before the 1984 attack by the Hindustani Government on Sri Darbar
Sahib, Bhai Inderjeet Singh wrote a final letter to his parents. In that letter
Bhai Sahib mentioned many things including the fact that the Indian Army had
surrounded Sri Darbar Sahib.
Bhai Sahib’s Seva during the 1984 Attack
During
the attack General Shahbeg Singh Ji told Bhai Inderjeet Singh Ji to take up a
position at the water tanks. (Paani Walay Tanka Outa)
Bhai Inderjeet Singh Ji
fought with the bravery expected by those beautiful sons and daughters of Guru
Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Bhai Sahib and the other Singhs who had taken up those
positions around the water tanks stopped many Indian forces from entering Sri
Darbar Sahib. From this position Singhs were able to inflict heavy casualties on
invading forces as they were very high up and could see the different ways the
Invading forces were trying to come through. As they did this, Singhs would open
fire.
Moving to Sham
Singh’s Dera
On the 3rd of June 1984, Bhai Sahib’s duty was changed. He was told to go to the
height floor in Sham Singh’s Dera. This building is on the Atta wali mandi side
of Amritsar. From the floor Bhai Sahib now stood at he was able to fire bullets
which would go straight into the Indian Army’s bunkers.
Bhai Sahib did this seva very well and was able to send many soldiers to face
the true justice of Akaal Purakh at Dharam Rai’s court. Bhai Sahib was so
proficient at aiming and shooting that all he required was one shot, which would
send the bullet straight into the soldier’s head.
Bhai Sahib’s
Shaheedi
On the 7th of June 1984 the Indian Forces were tired of the causalities they
were suffering due to the fire of Singhs on the top floor of Sham Singh’s Dera.
As a consequence of this they turned their attention here and started firing on
this building non stop for several hours. Thousands of bullets were cutting
through the air and many Singhs who had taken up positions here either got badly
injured or attained Shaheedi. The only reason this happened was because the
Singhs of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj had run out of ammunition at this point.
The Singhs who were badly injured, were bleeding profusely. They had not eaten
or drunk anything for many days, so they had become very weak, but they still
remained in Chardee Kala. It was then that the coward Hindustani forces entered
the building the remaining Singhs were in. They then forced the injured Singhs
into one of their camps. After a while they then they shot Bhai Inderjeet Singh
Ji and the other 21 Singhs with him that they had brought to this camp.
Baba Dayal singh sent his Singhs to tell Bhai Sahibs family of his Shaheedi.
When Bhai Sahib’s head was accepted by Guru Sahib he was only 17 years and 5
months old.
Conclusion
After the Shaheedi of Bhai Inderjeet Singh Ji, his mother used to pray and would
say the following in her ardas to Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj:
“Hey Sacha
Patsaah! Main Apna Putra Vichu Apna Dasvandh Deh Dita Hai."
